Pet’s eyes are abnormal!

01

Cute pets all have a pair of cute big eyes, some are cute, some are cute, some are agile, and some are arrogant. When we greet pets, we always look into their eyes first, so when there are abnormalities in their eyes, it is also easy to detect. Sometimes they may find that they scratch their eyes with their front paws, sometimes they see pus and mucus secreted from the eyes, sometimes the eyes are red, swollen, and full of blood, but not all eye abnormalities are necessarily diseases.

Cat and dog owners often see some liquid in the inner corner of their pets’ eyes, sometimes transparent water, and sometimes sticky liquid. I remember yesterday when a pet owner came to inquire about this situation, the local hospital said it was a fire, and this. First of all, we need to know that there is no such thing as excessive heat in Western medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine may have it, but all pet diseases are built on the foundation of Western medicine, because traditional Chinese medicine has not treated pets for thousands of years. For traditional Chinese medicine, which has accumulated experience as its greatest advantage, there is no experience in the field of pets.

Since there is no fire in Western medicine, what is the white mucus and sometimes even red pus and tears at the corners of the eyes? Many times, this is not a disease, but rather a secretion caused by insufficient water in the animal’s eyes. Because cats, dogs, and even guinea pigs and hamsters have almost no sweat glands on their bodies, all tears are their third largest metabolic organ. Apart from feces and urine, many trace elements are metabolized through tears. When pets drink less water or the surrounding environment is hot, drinking a large amount of water can turn into saliva or urine, leading to insufficient tears and thick tears at the corners of their eyes. When there is a lot of water in this liquid, it is clear, but when there is less water, it becomes white because the secretions contain a large amount of iron. Therefore, when the liquid gradually evaporates, the remaining iron adheres to the hair, forming red iron oxide. This is also why many tear marks are reddish brown.

The thick tears and tear marks formed by this reason are not diseases. We don’t often see pets scratching with their paws and unable to open their eyes. Just drink plenty of water or a small amount of antibiotic free eye drops that nourish the eyes.

Pets with eye diseases usually have itching, congestion, redness, and swelling. They will repeatedly scratch the eyes, causing depilation of the surrounding eye sockets. Opening the eyelids can reveal a lot of blood, secreting a large amount of pus, and in severe cases, even causing the eyelids to stick together and not open well. The above symptoms are used to distinguish between eye diseases and the previously mentioned dry areas of the eyes. The most common pet eye diseases include conjunctivitis, keratitis, foreign body irritation, corneal ulcers, cataracts, and glaucoma.

Conjunctivitis and keratitis are the most common eye diseases in pets. Dogs are more likely to be caused by bacterial invasion after scratching their eyes with their front paws, cats are more likely to be caused by herpes or cup-shaped viruses, and guinea pigs and rabbits are more likely to be caused by repeated rubbing of grass against their eyes, leading to bacterial invasion from the dust on the grass. The symptoms often include congestion and swelling of the eyes, inability to open them normally, secretion of a large amount of mucus, and itching. Generally speaking, using different antibiotic eye drops based on possible causes can restore health.

The discomfort caused by foreign object stimulation in the eyes is often seen in long haired cats and dogs, because the eyelashes or hair around the eyes are inverted, piercing or repeatedly rubbing the eyes can cause discomfort in pets. Pet owners can easily rule it out by careful observation. Grass eating animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits may have some grass tips piercing their eyes and even breaking in their eyelids, causing congestion and infection. Most foreign body irritants can cause redness and congestion in the eyes. After removing the eyelids and rinsing with antibiotic free eye drops, you can see where the problem lies, and then construct or remove the irritant foreign body.

Corneal ulcers, cataracts, and glaucoma are relatively serious eye diseases that can lead to whitening of the pupil, loss of vision, and swelling and protrusion of the eyeball. Because most animal hospitals do not have sound ophthalmic equipment to measure intraocular pressure, it is not easy to distinguish between glaucoma and cataracts. Perhaps the easiest way to distinguish is that glaucoma can cause more eyeballs to protrude due to excessive intraocular pressure. Corneal ulcers may be caused by foreign body scratches, dust friction, bacterial infections, and other factors that damage the surface of the cornea. Subsequently, a large amount of thick fluid is secreted and edema is prominent. In this case, surgery is not recommended unless it is necessary. Artificial tears should be used in combination with a large amount of antibiotic eye drops to avoid infection of the damaged area, and patients should wait patiently for the wound to heal.

Whether a pet’s eyes are sick or not is a concern for every pet owner, after all, many damages to the eyes are irreversible. Therefore, when you find that their eyes are congested, red and swollen, and secrete a large amount of purulent mucus, it is necessary to pay enough attention.
