Enrofloxacin Tablets for Dogs and Cats

Oral fluoroquinolone antibacterial tablets for the management of infections caused by bacteria susceptible to enrofloxacin in dogs and cats.

WERVIC supplies standard enrofloxacin tablets and supports veterinary medicine importers, distributors and animal health brands with customized strengths, packaging, multilingual labeling and product documentation.

Enrofloxacin Tablets for Susceptible Bacterial Infections

Enrofloxacin is a veterinary fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent. It acts against susceptible bacteria by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase, interfering with DNA replication and resulting in bactericidal activity.

Enrofloxacin tablets may be used in dogs and cats when a bacterial infection has been diagnosed and the pathogen is known or expected to be susceptible to enrofloxacin.

The current WERVIC product is available as:

50mg enrofloxacin per tablet;
100mg enrofloxacin per tablet;
10 tablets per blister;
Oral administration;
For dogs and cats.

This is an antibacterial veterinary medicine, not an anti-inflammatory drug. It should not be used for viral, fungal or non-infectious inflammatory conditions.

通用

What Enrofloxacin Tablets Treat

The appropriate indication depends on the target species, bacterial susceptibility and locally approved product label.

In Dogs

Enrofloxacin tablets may be considered for susceptible bacterial infections involving:

Respiratory tract;
Urinary tract;
Skin and soft tissue;
Wounds and abscesses;
Selected gastrointestinal infections;
Other infections confirmed by veterinary diagnosis.

In Cats

In cats, enrofloxacin may be used for diagnosed bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. Official product information includes feline dermal infections such as wounds and abscesses associated with susceptible bacteria.

Why Bacterial Susceptibility Matters

Enrofloxacin should not be promoted as a universal treatment for every infection.
Susceptibility testing is recommended where practical, particularly when:

The infection is recurrent;
Previous antibacterial treatment has failed;
Resistant bacteria are suspected;
The animal has received repeated antibiotic courses;
The infection is severe or complicated;
Local antimicrobial guidelines restrict fluoroquinolone use.

A “susceptible” laboratory result indicates that the pathogen is likely to be inhibited by achievable drug concentrations. Resistant isolates are unlikely to respond adequately and require an alternative treatment.

Clinic or distributor portfolios requiring a higher-strength option;
Markets where 100mg is an established registered strength.

Dosage and Administration

For oral administration only.

The dose and treatment duration must follow:
The locally approved product label;
The prescribing veterinarian’s instructions;
Target species and body weight;
Infection type and severity;
Bacterial susceptibility;

Responsible Antibacterial Use

Fluoroquinolones are important veterinary antibacterial medicines. Improper or unnecessary use may contribute to bacterial resistance and reduce the effectiveness of future treatment.

Is intended for diagnosed or strongly suspected bacterial infections;
Should be used under veterinary direction;
Should not be used for routine prevention without an approved indication;
Should preferably be selected according to susceptibility testing;
Must be administered according to the approved dose and treatment duration;

Contraindications and Precautions

Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to enrofloxacin or other quinolone-class medicines.

Important precautions include:

Use cautiously in animals with known or suspected central nervous system disorders;
Quinolones may be associated with CNS stimulation and seizures in susceptible animals;
Avoid use in immature dogs during rapid growth unless permitted by the approved label;
Fluoroquinolones have been associated with cartilage damage in growing animals;
Use cautiously in animals with impaired renal or hepatic function;
Do not exceed the approved daily dose in cats;
Safety in pregnant or breeding animals must be confirmed from the applicable product label;
Keep the medicine out of the reach of children and animals;

Specific Precaution for Cats

Enrofloxacin use in cats has been associated with retinal toxicity in rare cases, particularly at excessive doses.

Possible Adverse Reactions

Possible adverse reactions may include:

Vomiting;
Reduced appetite;
Diarrhea or other gastrointestinal discomfort;
Depression or reduced activity;
Neurological signs in susceptible animals;
Retinal effects in cats when inappropriate doses are administered.
